Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Boston, of March 20,
1775, to his friend in this town. "Last Thursday was
observed here as a day of fasting and prayer; in the
forenoon of that day, when service began, a number of
officers and soldiers, of the 4th or King's own regiment,
brought two [markee] tents, and pitched them within 20 feet
of the meeting house, at West-Boston; then sent for three
drums, and two fifes, and kept them beating, and playing,
Yankee Doodle, all service time, so that the congregation
could scarce hear the minister: This I saw myself."
