The following Song was sung before his Excellency General
Washington, appointed Grand Master of Free and Accepted
Masons throughout the United States of America, after the
procession on St. John's Day, the 24th ult.
As Colinet and Phebe sat
Beneath a poplar grove,
And gentle youth, with fondest truth,
Was telling tales of love:
. . . [4 lines and 2 verses]
Whilst all around we hear no sound
But war's terrific strains;
The drum commands our arming bands,
And chides each tardy swain.
. . . [4 lines and 1 more verse]
