Salem, April 26. On Tuesday last a considerable number of
youth, of both sexes, who have been under the tuition of Mr.
Ripley, met at one of the Meeting-Houses, and entertained a
large assembly by singing a number of Anthems, &c. to
general acceptation. And,
On Wednesday last a much larger number of youth, selected
from Mr. Munson's scholars in this and several neighbouring
towns, met at another of the Meeting-Houses, and performed
their several parts in Psalmody, particularly in singing a
number of Anthems, to the general approbation of the
audience. And, On Thursday evening a concert of vocal and
instrumental musick was performed at the Assembly-Room,
before a large company of the gentlemen and ladies of the
town, who were were very highly pleased with the
entertainment. The several parts in the concert were
performed by a number of gentlemen of this place, who, the
winter past, have spent their leisure hours in perfecting
themselves, for their own amusement, in the most approved
branches of that noble science.
Music has charms to sooth the savage breast,
To soften rocks, and bend the knotted oak.
