Copy of a curious paragraph taken from Robertson's
Charlestown Gazette of Jan. 1, shewing that the British
officers there dance with the Negro domestics, intending
thereby to shew an indignity to the Carolina ladies; it
however only discovers to the world the contempt they are
held in, in that country.
Last Wednesday evening the Aethiopian Ladies of this town
gave an elegant entertainment at the long room in Meeting
street to a numerous company of gentlemen of various habits
and denominations, the dancing which began about seven,
shewed infinite judgement, and the supper about eleven
displayed peculiar taste. The ladies returned to dancing
after supper, and the company separated with regret about
four in the morning. In short the whole was conducted with
a taste that does much honor to the managers.
