Said to have been written in Westminster Abbey, during the
interment of Frederick the late Prince of Wales, and father
of George III. King of Great Britain:
Here lies Frederick the silly,
I had rather it had been Billy*
It had been no loss to the nation,
If it had been the whole generation.
Since God has taken the best,
May the d--l take the rest.
*William, late Duke of Cumberland.
The following is said to have been handed up to the
precentor or clerk of the High Kirk in Edinburgh by a lady,
in the Thanksgiving Day for the defeat of the Scots rebels
at the battle of Culloden, in 1746.
Whoe'er heard of such mad pranks,
To murder men and give God thanks?
Stop, preacher! pray go no further,
For God receives no thanks for murder.
