Friday last being the anniversary of the declaration of the
Independence of America, the morning was ushered in with
ringing of bells, . . . [17 lines, flags, reception at
President's house, entertainment] In the evening the city
was entertained with Mr. Mason's triumphal car, in which was
a portrait of Gen. Washington, with those of Gen. Gates and
Count Rochambeau, --the car preceded by music, and a number
of boys and girls, dressed in white, carrying torches in
short it was a day of joy and pleasure to every lover of
American independence.
