March 18. . . The Edinburgh Courant of March 11 contains a
great number of letters from different parts of Scotland,
relative to the rejoicings made . . . on account of the
success of the Hon. Mr. Douglass in his causes. Mr.
Douglas, in particular, after a grand entertainment, on the
19th instant, a number of gentlemen accompanied by all the
different tradesmen and attended by the military with their
captains, &c. walked in procession from Douglass Castle to
the Cross, with drums beating, colours flying and musick of
different kinds, where they drew up, and several toast were
drank under repeated discharge of the fire arms. So
numerous . . .upwards of 100 gallons of rum punch, besides a
great quantity of wine and ale were drank at the Cross. In
the evening there was a ball, illuminations, bonfires, &c.
