To the Public. There are two paragraphs in Major Ewen's
address. . . [long letter about disagreement at church and
problems over getting people to ring the church bells.]
Prayers in the evening have been two or three times
prevented because there was no person to ring the bell and
light the candles. . .Two of the evenings Colonel Jones sent
his Negroe Prince to ring the bell; but as the man could get
no candles from Major Ewen. . .I never had the key or keys
of the Church till the day that Mr. Tondee sent some boys to
ring the Church bells. . . [signed] Haddon Smith. December
31, 1774.
