A private letter from an officer at Quebec dated October 26
mentions, that eight hundred Indians, who had left General
Burgoyne near a fortnight before the convention, had met a
body of provincials, consisting of 250 men, near Fort-
Edward, whom they surrounded, and setting up the war song,
according to their savage custom, destroyed almost the whole
party which fell into their hands; and that a number of
women and children who were at a small distance, with a
quantity of provisions for Mr. Gates's army, were taken
immediately after, and carried prisoners to the back
settlements.
