[In article entitled "To the People of the State of
Massachusetts-Bay," part of an ongoing discussion of state
control of religions:]
I leave with the respectable public to determine, how far
their narrative is calculated to prove the truth of the
story, that there is a sect, who, under the idea of
religion, dance stark naked, &c. It proves indeed, that
"men will be guilty of great extravagancies, when urged by a
misguided conscience, and enthusiastic zeal." Of this, no
other proof was wanting, than the late conduct of many in
the town of Pepperell. . . [signed] Milton. February, 1779
