[Narrative of mutiny of Continental troops stationed in
Lancaster.] . . . Accordingly on Thursday the 17th ult.
about 80 soldiers without their officers, but completely
armed with bayonets fixed, drums beating, and green boughs
in their hats, marched down Market street [in Philadelphia],
and proceeded to the barracks, where there were quartered
150 old soldiers . . . No measures were taken. . .till the
Saturday following, when, to the astonishment of the city,
and the public dishonor, these troops with fixed bayonets,
and drums beating, marched to the State House. . . [sent up
a message, finally were persuaded to return to the barracks
and eventually back to Lancaster with no damage done.]
