THE FLIGHT OF THE MUSES.
1.
While Nature reclin'd on the bosom of May,
And Luna's soft beams rekindl'd the day,
The Muses came trooping to Avon's smooth stream,
Where wrapt in sweet fancies their Shakespear would read,
Where smit with their beauties, he lov'd to retreat,
And warbled his wild notes, inchantingly sweet.
2.
There oft would they keep their May-Virgils unseen,
And frolic the night and dance light on the green:
But now the gay dance they quickly gave o'er,
And music and pastime prevailed no more--
