Extract of a letter from a Gentleman at Newport, dated March
7, 1781.
   His excellency General Washington, arrived yesterday in
the forenoon on board the Admiral,  when General Rochambeau
met him: --After spending an hour or two on board, he landed
about one o'clock, . . . [10 lines, troops turned out,
dinner]  The town ran together, to devise a mode, in which
they might evidence their joy on the occasion: --To
illuminate the town, was the result of their meeting: --At
dark the candles were lighted.  Ringing of bells, and every
demonstration of joy, marked the evening. . .
