Sir, My sudden departure from E---, and the uncertainty of
every friend concerning my situation, are circumstances
that, I doubt now, 'ere now have been interpreted much to my
disadvantage. . . [narrative of seduction of young woman.]
Hence dress and finery were my sole studies, and youth and
folly like my own my sole companions. . . The elegance of
apparel, the splendour of a ball-room, or the variations of
the fashion, were strongly recommended. . .
