On the Predilection of the Parisians in Favour of their

A young parisian going to Amsterdam . . . [asks Dutchman
identity of owner of certain house, a lady, winner of
lottery, funeral cortege; response the same, "Ik kan niet
verstaan" which Parisian takes to mean, Mr. Kaniserstan. The
following musical reference in the story:]
Proceeding on a little further, his attention was
suddenly attracted by the beating of drums and sounding of
