Cologne, March 1. [extracts from a letter concerning
findings at Mt. Vesuvius; 11 lines down:]
We persuaded ourselves at first, that there was only a
theatre in the place that had been dug into; viz., that
theatre, which according to Historians, was buried by an
earthquake in the reign of the Emperor Titus. But for some
time past the ruins of other edifices have been found, which
prove the discovery not to consist of a theatre only, but of
an entire city. . . [26 lines]
We have in the architrave of the theatre, the name both
of him that caused it to be built, and of the architect who
built it: for the following words appear in large capitals,
THEATRUM ORCHESTRANI DE SUO--L.RUFUS, L. FILUS; and a little
after, in smaller letters, Urnilius P.J. Architect. . .
