Proposals for opening a dancing-school at Upper-Marlborough,
at the request of several gentlemen and ladies in Prince-
George's County.
The subscriber (who teaches a large school at Annapolis
every Friday and Saturday) intends to open a dancing-school
at Upper-Marlborough town (if encourag'd) the first day of
November next, to be taught every Tuesday and Wednesday.
And notwithstanding the unavoidable expenses of travelling,
keeping horses, and a musician (who teaches to play well
upon the violin) the subscriber will demand no greater price
than what he has at Annapolis, which is a pistole entrance,
and six pounds a year; and those who chuse to learn by the
quarter, to pay forty shillings, and the entrance.
The subscriber requests, that the gentlemen and ladies
(who are desirous to encourage the said school) will be
pleased to send their names, and number of scholars they
intend to sent, to Mr. Benjamin Brookes at Marlborough, as
soon as possible; and if the subscriber may be assured of a
dozen scholars, he thinks it will be sufficient to begin
with, otherwise not.
The subscriber also teaches the noble science of defence
and pursuit of the small-sword, with all the favourite
thrusts, guards and parades; the method of disarming, and
fencing against rash men (who are not skilful in the
science) with blunts or sharps, as now practiced in the City
of London; a science very necessary for every gentleman to
know, especially in this time of imminent danger.
N.B. The subscriber begs leave to return his most
grateful acknowledgments to the gentlemen and ladies at
Annapolis, who have been pleased to favour him with the
tuition of their children; and assures them, that neither
application or industry will be wanting to improve his
pupils in dancing, and every other necessary embellishment,
to the utmost of his abilities. [signed] John Orsmby.
