For the Massachusetts Gazette. Mr. Printer. Perhaps more
particular account of the Northampton ladies rejoicing, on
the news of peace, than what has hitherto transpired, may be
acceptable to some of your readers, if you thus think, the
following is proposed for publication. Yours, [signed] Z.X.
Last Thursday (April 24th)
Was here a day of joy, great mirth,
On the account of glorious peace.
(Swords to be sheath'd all wars to cease)
. . . [110 lines. ladies, omitted from the peace
celebrations, decide to have their own. From the notices in
following issues, this poem may have been written by a man
in criticism of local ladies.]
'Twas then propos'd, to dance and sing
And close the whole--with--round by ring;
The whole perform'd ('twas said to be)
With utmost---regularity.
Nitchwogg, May 1st, 1783.
