To the managers of the Baltimore Theatre. Gentlemen, In
civilized nations the stage has been considered the school
of improvement, for which reason, all plays having a
tendency to contaminate the morals of youth, should be
abolished, and those alone represented which express the
noblest sentiments of the mind. The tragedy of Gustavus
Vasa, or the Deliverer of his Country, is replete with the
most exalted ideas of true heroism, and should be adopted by
us, to shew that we can sympathise in the distress, and
applaud the courage of, a people, who prefer death to the
imperious will of a tyrant; nor can it fail of success on
the stage, when every free bosom present at the
representation, will see the patriot flame rekindled for the
service of his country. May 25, 1782. [signed] Cato
