ON THE WONDERS OF CREATION
As in my journeying thro' this vale of tears,
Or joys transport, or cares depress my mind;
My heart and tongue incessantly shall praise,
The great incomprehensive founder of the world!
His bounteous works shall swell my grateful song,
I'll dwell for ever on the blissful theme;
Hymning his praise, my joy-enraptur'd soul
Mounts on extatic wings, and sings among the scheres.
Whether swift thought explores the milky way,
Attends the planets thro' their destin'd course;
Or thro' creation looks with prying eye,
Still all's beyond conception! wonderful! divine!
Sing, sing, O man, thy great Creator's works!
Tell forth his glory round the spacious earth;
Inform the infant tongue to tune his praise,
That thoughts of heav'nly bliss may swell the rising mind.
Join all creation in the mighty theme!
Roar out ye floods; ye mountains lift your heads;
Rejoice ye people for the Lord is King!
And boundless mercy dwells around his awful throne.
