Montgomery County, April 12, 1783. Miss Goddard, Permit me
the happiness of informing you, that the glorious event of
peace and independence was celebrated at our court-house, by
at least 80 most respectable gentlemen and ladies, on
Wednesday the 9th instant. An elegant dinner was provided,
after which the following toasts were drank. The Hessian
band (being previously procuded from Frederick-Town) playing
the whole time. . . [3 lines] A ball was opened in the
evening, and continued with the greatest decorum and
vivacity till 12, when the company dispersed.
We are, I believe, the first to celebrate this desireable
