13 May 1783:22 (10/28 515)
Baltimore, May 13. On Saturday the 3d instant, the Tragedy
of The Roman Father was performed at the Theatre in Upper
Marlborough, by Mr. Ryan's Company of Comedians, from
Baltimore
--To say they gave universal satisfaction, would
inadequately express their merits, or the feelings they
excited.-- The female heart, (if one there was) which
participated not in the distresses of the faithful, tender,
agonizing Horatia--must have been destitute of that softs
sensibility and delicate sympathy which constitute the most
alluring charm of feminality. --Mr. Heard, powerfully
supported the august character in which he appeared--
alternately exhibiting the venerable Patriot! The Exulting
father of a "conquering hero!" and the aggrieved parent of
an unhappy daughter, whose sorrows he felt as a man, while
he condemn'd them as a Roman. --Mr. Ryan, we must leave in
silence--from the same motive which influenced the Areist to
veil the father's face in that celebrated painting which
represents Iphigenia, bound for sacrifice.--The horror and
despair of Agamemnon baffled the pencil's power--The
graceful figure, and majestic deportment of this inimitable
performer, triumph over those of the pen. --Before the
curtain falls, permit us to take a view of that brilliant
scene which disclosed to us the loved name of Washington--
who like an auspicious planet, with his thirteen satellites,
dispensed influence on all beneath--witness the repeated
shouts of applause with which this heart-enlivening scene
was received by the delighted spectators.
