[Letter to the editor Janus from Walter Hardfate, re. his
experience with unrequited love; and Janus's advice
concerning a potential mistress for the letter writer:]
[:12]. . . [Re chiromancy or palmistry: recommends looking
at the left hand of his potential female suitor, which is
closest to her heart] Know then, that if your mistress's
mons veneris be adorned with lines than in any other place,
she will have many times good fortune; but she will (in
spight of your teeth) be careless, delicate, nice and idle,
and will have every thing she affects, tho' I believe she
will be pretty good humour'd. If she has many and eminent
lines on the Mount of Mercury, she will certainly sing well,
and make orations; and you know best whether you can bear
the musick or eloquence of a woman.
