London, Octob. 28. On Thursday night at the theatre in
Drury Lane, a gentlewoman who sat in the pit to see the
play, fancying she saw a smoke issue from under the stage,
and thinking she perceived the smell of fire, happening to
declare these thoughts aloud, and at the same time
endeavouring with great precipitancy, to get out of the
house, all this gave such an alarm, as threw the numerous
audience into confusion for about the space of half an hour.
In which time much mischief was done, and one woman big with
child was press'd to death; but upon a strict search no
signs of fire appeared, the terror was stop'd at length, and
the rest of the play was acted without interruption.
