[Essay on passion(s)] . . . There in friendly converse set
some, in rapturous devotion talking o'er the grand
transactions of the almighty; they sung the power that first
gave them and all things else a birth from nothing. Now by
the creating word all the beauteous frame of nature arose to
confess the omnipotence that called it into being. They
tun'd their lyres to highest notes of praise, when their
meditations lead them on to thank the bounteous author of
all their bliss. Creation and the work of nature held their
attention fixt, and fed their tho'ts of gratitude and joy.
While others there in mysterious songs, record the
providence of the most high, who in searchless wisdom rules
the fares of all his work. With bold soaring tho'ts, the
sung, how all hang on his power, and how his wisdom guides,
and goodness all supplies.
