York, Septemb. 9. Having nothing of news worth sending from
the country round us, I shall entertain you with what has
happened remarkable in this city. Last Sunday at St. Mary's
Church, without the gate called Boudam Bar, several couple
were ask'd at church (as tis call'd) the last of which was a
very young man and woman, neither of 'em above nineteen
years of age, but very unfortunately for the former, the
banes were forbid by an old woman of above fourscore, who
came in with her head bound up with a forehead cloth, and
looked much fitter for her grave than a husband; which set
the congregation into such a laughter, that had not the
clerk given out the psalm, and began to sing, I believe it
would not have been presently over. As soon as divine
service was done, she and another old woman, much like her
self, went to the parson to give reason for what she had
done; when she declared, that the young man had private
dealings (as she called it) with her for some time, and that
he had promised her marriage; to which the other said she
was a witness. How this will end is uncertain yet: however
the young man, by his ill conduct, to his great
mortification and shame, has lost his intended spouse, who
is resolved never to see him again.
