Extract of a letter from Gibraltar, dated June 16 N.S.
Captain Falkingham, in the Salisbury attended by ---- men of
war, received Mr. Zollicoffee, our ambassador, on board, and
as many officers and gentlemen of the garrison as had a mind
to see the manner of his reception; there went over about 30
of us, which with the officers of the men of war, made up
about 50 more, that attended his Excellency ashore. The
bashaw had his tent fixed by the sea side, and was attended
by about 3000 people, with all sorts of musick. Two
alcaldes received us at landing, and conducted us to the
bashaw's tent, a few paces from the water side, and he
received the ambassador at the door: A short ceremony
passed, and then we went to a house of his a mile from the
sea, where he gave a splendid dinner, in their way,
sufficient for 300 people; and in the evening houses were
prepared for us all. We went from Tetuan together with
musick, cavalcading, and tournaments: He went himself, and
gave us a day of wild boar hunting, when 26 boars were
killed in 7 hours time, and gave us a plentiful dinner in
the field, and returned with cavalcading all the way. In
short, he used us with the greatest civility imaginable. . .
