London. May 13. . . On Saturday evening last words arising
in the scene room of the play-house in Drury-Lane, between
Mr. Hallem and Mr. Mechlin, two of the comedians, the latter
catch'd up a walking-stick, and unfortunately push'd it with
great violence in at Mr. Hallam's left eye, so that he was
immediately carried to the theatre ale-house, and
notwithstanding all assistance, expired on Sunday night.
Yesterday the coroner's inquest sat on the body, and after
an examination of several hours, brought in the verdict
willful murder. Mr. Mechlin made his escape from the top of
the house through the upper gallery, and went off
undiscovered with the crowd.
