New-York, Sept. 12. On Saturday last came on the elections
of a representative to serve in General Assembly for the
City and county of New-York, in the room of Capt Garrit van
Horn, deceased. The electors appeared in the field ( the
usual place of elections ) about 9 o'clock, with drums
beating and colours flying, trumpets sounding, & violins
playing. The two candidates put up were Mr. Adolph Philipse
and Mr. Cornelius van Horn. Most of the merchants and
gentlemen of the place appeared for Mr. Philipse, and seem'd
to be the greatest number; but a poll was demanded, and
thereupon the candidates & electors repaired to the
City-Hall, where the poll was carried on all day till about
9 o'clock at night with great warmth on both sides, the
drums and musick going about during that time. Betwixt 9 &
10 at night the poll was closed, and the number of votes
were as followeth, viz. for Mr Philipse 413, and for Mr. Van
Horn 399. And 'twas agreed that on Monday the 12th of
September there should be a scrutiny on the poll: Of which
you may expect an account in our next.
