Rome, Feb. 13, N.S. This day se'nnight when the pope dy'd,
the Cardinal Chamberlain, attended by the clerks of the
Apostolical Chamber, and the Swift guards, went to the
Palace, where he view'd his corpses, and took charge of the
seal call'd the Fisherman's Ring; after which the Clerks of
the Chamber shar'd the government of the palace. Then the
Cardinal Chamberlain order'd the bell of the capitol to be
toll'd, and all the bells of the city were toll'd likewise
for an hour. Two days after the corpse, which had been
embalm'd that morning, was carry'd to the Vatican in a
litter of red velvet, all open. Seven pieces of cannon
revers'd, follow'd the corpse, and the cuirassiers march'd
in the rear; during which the bells of all the churches it
pass'd by were toll'd. . .
