I will now turn my thoughts upon the common education of our
females (especially in the maritime towns) they are sent as
soon as they can speak, to some woman to be instructed in
reading; then the use of the needle, and many are sent 3 or
six months to learn writing and arithmetic; next to dancing
school, (if people of property) and then there education is
compleat. Now how often do we see ladies put to great
difficulty even to write a letter of friendship. . . [25
