ON THE PRESENT TIME.
When Britains with the lark arose and slept,
Not midnight hours o'er gaming tables kept;
When barley's strength'ning juice, and beef, man's repast,
Not champagne, nor ragoos, were drank or eat;
E'er nerve-impairing tea or pois'nous gin
Had made a race not half what men had been:
Then, then a Briton through the world was fear'd,
And Britain's flag triumphant rode rever'd,
'Twas then a single ship was deem'd of course,
A match for two of France of equal force.
