Bellman:
THE MORNING OF NEW YEAR'S DAY, 1760.
Paul's has struck twelve--All hail the op'ning year!
O may it glorious as the last appear.
All hail great George! for whose indulgent reign,
Just providence new wonders did ordain!
All hail my country! Who'd not rather be
An English bellman, than a French marquis?
See! See! our vict'ries, chalk'd on yonder wall:
Down to long fam'd Quebec, from Senegal.
With drubbing of our foes, there's such a rout,
Our faggots, and our candles, won't hold out.
Where's now the invasion, (soul of brainless schemes!)
Shrunk to meer vapour, in the land of ream.
