[London] Jan. 20. On Monday died at his house at
Teddington, in the 83d year of his age, the Rev. Dr. Stephen
Hales, D. D. F. R. S. clerk of the close to the Princess
Dowager of Wales, and Minister of Teddington: A gentleman
whose great modesty, (tho' his merit was known and revered
by all the world) prevented his aspiring to any dignities in
the church.
From Peer or Bishop 'tis no easy thing
To draw the man who loves his God and King;
Alas! I copy (from my draught wou'd fall)
From honesty Mah'met, or plain Parson Hale.
Pope, Ep. II, p. 195.
