From a late leading paper. To the Printer. Our favourite
minister having been very severely attacked, in a late
publication, your giving room to the following lines will
oblige one of your constant readers.
TO THE AUTHOR OF THE BEAVERS, A FABLE.
In vain may rancour vent its spite
While critics snarl, or authors bite;
In vain pretended patriots rail,
O'er muddy port, or muddier ale:
No calumny can fix a dart,
Where honesty hath steel'd the heart:
Nor can the powers of verse, or wit,
That all combin'd, dishonour Pitt.
