London, June 18. On the evening of his majesty's birth-day
several gentlemen of Billingsgate and Bridgwards,
illuminated the monument at their own expense; when the
following motto appeared in transparent capitals round the
iron rails, Dignity to the crown; liberty to the subject;
and afterwards concluded the evening at the Swan tavern with
more loyal toasts.
The illuminations and fire-works at the Mansion-house were
very grand. The six pillars which support the portico were
illuminated with upwards of 4000 lamps. The whole was
conducted with the greatest order, and tho' a vast concourse
of people assembled, we hear of no mischief being done.
Next to the Mansion-house it is reckoned the Opera-house in
the Hay-Market was the most grandly illuminated, having some
curious paintings on the front, and the lamps placed in such
a manner, as to shew sundry emblematical figures and devices
proper for the occasion.
