Boston, June 11. The Rev Mr. Whitefield preached his
farewell sermon last Wednesday, at the Old South Meeting
House, and the day following he set out on his journey to
the southward. . . [18 lines about Mr. Whitefield]
ADDRESS TO THE REV. MR. WHITEFIELD, ON HIS DEPARTURE.
And must thou go? Farewell thou sacred guide!
God speed thy labours, God thy strength support,
So great the harvest, and the field so wide,
So few the lab'rers, and the day so short:
Go then, thou man of God! still, still display,
All the rich treasures of thy heavenly tongue.
We owe thee much and much our hearts would pay,
Take all we can--a blessing and a song:
We bless thy zeal and yet would urge thy stay,
Admire thy haste, thy presence yet implore;
. . . [10 more lines] Amen.
