New-York. June 27. . . [10 lines] Saturday night last, one
Bersheba Clieveland, being out a dancing, in company with a
seaman named James Caldwell, & some words arising between
them, he struck her; upon which she endeavour'd to make her
escape over several fences from him, in attempting which she
hurt herself; this, with the heat of dancing, and the blow
she received, obliged her to take to her bed, where she
languished for two or three days, and then died:--The
coroner's inquest having found several marks of violence on
her, brought in their verdict, that her death was occasioned
by the said Caldwell.
