Portsmouth, May 30. The repeal of the Stamp-Act has
produced a universal jubilee throughout the continent of
America, every province, town and parish are emulating each
other in testifying their joy on this grand event: . . . [9

That the inhabitants of this town might not appear to be
wanting in their expressions of joy, loyalty and gratitude,
they unanimously set apart Thursday the 22d instant for the
celebration of this festivity.--A peal from all the bells
complimented the birth of that day, and a discharge of 21
cannon royally saluted the rising sun. Every one
recollecting the glorious cause, forsook their downy beds,
and with a glowing ardency, vyed who could most contribute
to render honor to the solemnity--a battery of 21 cannon was
erected and dedicated to his majesty near Liberty
Bridge--another of 13 was erected on Church Hill to the
honour of our great patriot Mr. Pitt, and a third of 5 on
the Town Wharfe to commemorate the illustrious Five, who
have ever distinguished themselves the patrons of
liberty--These periodically greeting each other, and being
served under the conduct of regular and experienced
engineers added greatly to the lustre of the day. Every
token, characteristic of an unfeigned satisfaction was now
exhibited; the ships were decorated with their colours the
bells rang an incessant peal, drums and music contributed to
make the harmony of sounds concordant to the apparent temper
and disposition of the people. . . [33 lines, 34 more lines]
