Anecdote of the celebrated Teresia Constantia Phillips,
during his residence in Jamaica, where she went soon after
publishing the famous apology for her life.
In 1754 or 1755, she was married to Mr. M---- (an Irishman)
a land surveyor in Kingston, with whom she lived happily;
but after some time, being reduced almost to a skeleton by
bad health, his countrymen pressed him to make his will; and
as his wife had been of such bad repute, said they was no
occasion to give her anything; . . . [33 lines, which
describe how she contrived that he would leave everything to
her in a new will] This was done directly, and then he set
out for the mountains, and died soon after, and she became
possessed of all his real & personal estate, which was not
inconsiderable. In the year 1757, or 1758, she was appointed
mistress of the revils in that island, which gave her power
over players there, which entitled her to a place on the
stage every time they played, and a benefit every season, by
which she generally got 100 guineas.
. . . [60 lines, which tell of her subsequent marriages and
her death]
