Hartford, Feb. 2, 1767. Extract of a letter from Litchfield
County, dated 8th January, 1767.
. . . [22 lines describing an ice storm]
  Whatever is, is right, is best:
  By man alone, man is oppess'd!
  Tempests and storms, wild hurricanes,
  With rising floods and falling rains,
  Upon no hostile errand come;
  Each prostrate tree, each floating dome.
  The stars above, and fiends below
  Ungrateful man (averse to know!)
  Each in its way his praises sings
  Who holds the scale of time and things.
  Fate, nature, chance, and all events,
  Controul'd by sovereign providence,
  Obey his will, proclaim his might,
  and prove whatever is, is right.
