TO THE REVEREND MR. H----N---Y.
Dear Sir,
Although hard fate forbids to me,
That I should claim the name of friend to thee.
Yet I presume these honest lines to send,
To thee dear H----n---y who art my friend,
(Your life and doctrine is a friend to me,
Then friend no more a paradox can be)
Did I not know thy modesty and truth--
--Thy conquest o'er the tempting vice of youth
Should be my theme--I'd praise thy virtuous pride,
And love to virtue, should to virtue hide.
. . . [12 more lines of verse, signed] J. Ellis.
Sometime School-Master at Wells.
