From the London Chronicle.
What mighty things from little causes flow!
How fleeting empire! So revolves the scene;
So time ordains, who rolls the things of pride
From dust to dust again.
. . . [12 lines about how empty is the pomp of kings]
We view the outward glories of a crown,
But dazzles with the lustre cannot see
The thorns which line it, & whole painful prickings
Embitter all the pompous sweets of empire.
