29 May 1772:23 (814)
Dartmouth College, 21st May, 1772. Yesterday the Rev'd
Messieurs David MacCluer and Levi Frisbie (both educated by
Doctor Wheelock) were ordained here to the work of the
ministry, with a special view to a mission among the Indians
at Muskingham beyond the Ohio, about 800 mile from hence;
where a remarkable door is opened for the propagation of
the gospel.
The Rev'd Mr Noble made the introductory prayer----The
Rev. Mr. Olcot the prayer before sermon----The Rev. Doctor
Wheelock preached a pertinent sermon from Mathew, 24.45,
"Who then is a faithful & wise servant, whom his Lord hath
made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due
season", and gave the charge. The Rev'd. Mr. Powers made
the prayer before, and the Rev'd Mr. Burroughs after the
charge, and the Rev. Mr. Weiman gave the right hand of
fellowship.
The solemnity which was performed with decency and
propriety, was concluded with an anthem, sung by the
students, suitable to the occasion.
