Last Tuesday morning about 2 o'clock departed this
transitory life in the hopes of a better, in the 37th years
of her age, of an apoplectic fit, Mrs. Sarah Wendell, the
amiable and virtuous consort of John Wendell, Esq; and
eldest daughter of Mr. Daniel Wentworth, late of this town,
merchant deceased; . . . [10 lines]
Who can say unto the Lord, what doest Thee?
He gave, he hath taken away, and blessed be his name,
Those whom He tries, he gives them power to stand,
He, Jacob tosts, and holds, both with one hand.
. . . [1 more line]
On the above sorrowful occasion, the following lines were
hastily composed by a very near friend.
Thou great first cause, thou all in all defin'd,
Whose voice the thunder is, whose breath's the wind;
Thou, whose feet, the clouds for dust afford,
Whose weapons are, the famine, pest and sword,
Thou, of whose power, beyond the ken of all,
We, earth a mote, the sea, a drop may call;
Breathe thou, caelestial ardure in breast,
I'll sing the Sabbath of Fidelia's rest.
. . . [23 lines]
Thy great Redeemer with a pleasing nod,
Bids thee thrice welcome to the pitying God;
And gently leads thee, to the joyous throng,
To chant his praise, in one eternal song.
The guardian angels, greet their mighty King,
And heaven's great arch, with hallelujahs ring,
In grateful tribute, for his sovereign grace,
In granting pity, to thy suffering case;
. . . [4 more lines, signed] Maritus.
