From the Pennsylvania Journal. Messrs. Bradford,
Please to insert the following, sacred to the memory of Maj.
Fleming, who fell at the battle of Princeton, and yet will
oblige, yours, &c.----
Amidst the horid din of cruel war,
The trumpets sound, the caltruns thundring roar
On Nassau's plains, the muses soft retreat,
The school of freedom, learning's awful seat,
Where Witherspoon with every virtue fraught
The generous youth his sacred precepts taught,
The sage's wisdom and the patriot's fire
A noble love of liberty inspire.
. . . [20 more lines]
Messrs. Bradfords,
The inclosed are the thoughts of a few minutes, which, if
you think them severe enough, "Print 'em egad."
Gall'way has fled, and join'd the vocal Howe,
To prove his baseness, see him cringe & bow;
A traitor to his country, and its laws,
A friend to tyrants, and their cursed cause:--
Unhappy wretch! Thy interest must be sold,
For continental, not for polish'd gold;
To sink the money, thou thyself cried down,
And stab'd thy country, to support the crown.
. . . [8 more lines, dated] New-Town, Bucks County, Feb. 3,
1777.
