24 May 1783:31 (27/1386)
Hampton, May 8, 1783. On Wednesday last the happy event of
the cessation of hostilities, and the termination of the
calamities and horrors of a long and bloody war, was
celebrated at North-Hampton, where the honorable President
of the state was escorted by a number of the principal
inhabitants into town, and on his arrival was received by
the company of militia of the town, and saluted with
thirteen cannon. At 11 o'clock the inhabitants together with
respectable number of gentlemen and ladies from other towns
proceeded to the meeting house, where an excellent discourse
adapted to the occasion was delivered by the Rev. Mr.
Maclintock; and the exercise concluded with several pieces
of agreeable music; after which they repaired to the house
of Mr. Leavill, where an elegant entertainment was provided.
