A letter from Detroit, August 8, 1763. . . In the morning of
the 30th, a detachment was ordered to march under the
command of Capt. Dalyell, of 140 men, with Capt. Gray of the
55th, Major Rogers, Captain Grant of the 80th . . . with a
proper proportion of serjeants, corporals and drummers, and
8 volunteers from the traders . . . we received a fire from
the houses, (of which there were many there) and hedges in
front, which killed and wounded the greatest part of the
advanced guard . . .
