Philadelphia, July 9. On the 4th instant, being the
anniversary of American independence, a commencement was
held at the university in this city, before a very crouded
assembly; a number of the principal officers of the state;
part of his excellency the French minister's family; and a
great concourse of most respectable citizens, politely
countenancing, and giving elegance to the litterary
entertainment. . .
The faculty and trustees . . . conferred upon his
excellency General George Washington, Esq; Commander in
Chief of the American army, the degree of Doctor of Laws. .

A band of music playing at proper intervals, improved the
general entertainment. . . .
