A DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE CAPTAIN OF A BRITISH FRIGATE AND A
TORY REFUGEE ON LONG ISLAND.
Refugee.
You're welcome captain, let us hear the news,
How have you drub'd the rebels off this cruise.
I hear you made Connecticut your tour,
What have you seen or done upon their shore.
Captain.
I've done no great to them, but I have seen
A strange infernal tragical machine,
A New invented sort of whirligig,
Which play'd and danc'd a horn-pipe and a jig.
Refugee. What could it play a tune and dance to boot,
No Highland bagpipe, harp or German flute;
Such comical diversion can advance,
They all can play but none of them can dance.
. . . [3 speeches]
[Captain]
Or whether it was clock work with a bell,
Intended only to keep time in H--ll;
Of what I know not--but it seem'd to stop,
And there appear'd a key to wind it up;
. . . [2 speeches, signed] Clerk, Amen. Idel Hall, June 26,
1778.
